The Mexico Chapter I brings together a body of work developed during two extended periods of residency and studio practice in Mexico City. Formed through movement across different regions of the country, the paintings emerge from encounters with landscape, material, climate, and the emotional residue of inhabiting unfamiliar places.

Throughout her travels, Anna van den Hoevel collected fragments from the environments she moved through: volcanic stone, dust, earth, and other traces carrying the physical memory of place. Incorporated into the paintings, these materials are not used as documentary evidence but as active participants within the work. Their presence introduces histories, textures, and forces that exceed representation.

Rather than depicting specific locations, the paintings translate lived experience into atmosphere. Memory appears not as image but as accumulation, pressure, rhythm, and surface. Layers of gesture, abrasion, concealment, and revelation mirror the way experiences settle within the body before they become conscious narratives.

At the center of this series lies an ongoing negotiation between vulnerability and transformation. The works arise from moments of uncertainty, displacement, curiosity, and intimacy, allowing emotional states to become material form. Painting functions as a process of carrying experience, holding what remains unresolved until it finds a visual language.

The Mexico Chapter is not a portrait of Mexico, but a record of being changed by it. The resulting works occupy a space between observation and memory, where place is no longer represented but felt.
